Is Real Sugar Better For You Than Refined Sugar?

!±8± Is Real Sugar Better For You Than Refined Sugar?

"Is real sugar better for you than refined sugar?" There is quite a debate raging on this subject. Opinions are flying on both sides of the debate. To fully form an informed opinion, you need to know how sugar is "refined." Then you will understand the answer to the question.

Refined sugar is nearly pure sucrose that is obtained from raw sugar sources such as sugar cane and sugar beets. Sugar cane provides the bulk of refined sugar because it is the more easily grown of the two source crops. The next steps in the process will help you to answer the question "is real sugar better for you than refined sugar?"

Sugar is normally refined in two major ways: affination and carbonization. Affination involves mixing raw sugar with high fructose syrup. This liquid mixture is fed into centrifugal chambers. The liquid is spun until it separates into liquid and sugar crystals. The sugar crystals are higher in sucrose content, but have an unacceptable level of contaminants, so carbonization is then used. In carbonization, the sugar is mixed with a liquid to make a 50/50 solution. Milk of lime is then added. The milk of lime mixes with the solution and calcium carbonate is formed. The calcium carbonate attracts the contaminates and discolorants so they can be removed. In some cases phosphorus is used instead of milk of lime. Knowing that all of these chemicals are added, it is not hard to answer the question "is real sugar better for you than refined sugar?"

Real sugars are those sugars that are in their natural forms and come from fruit, grain, and vegetables. These sugars are usually not "refined" in anyway. Some of the sources of these sugars are honey, molasses, and agave. Sugar cane and sugar beets can provide this type of sugar if they have not been processed. Normally the source syrup is boiled and dried to produce sugar crystals. Some examples of this type of crystal sugar are demerara, muscovado, and turbinado. These sugars are yellowish or brown in color and tend to clump when exposed to air.

The best course of action is to only consume naturally occurring sugars in their natural forms. That is difficult to do. If you have to use added sugar, then it is obvious that real sugar is best. Answering if real sugar is better for you than refined sugar is kind of a no-brainer. Carbohydrates in their natural forms are easier for your body to digest, use, and eliminate. The chemicals added during processing and refining are harmful and should be avoided whenever possible. Consuming real sugar will lead to a more healthy and balanced diet and a healthier you. Is real sugar better for you than refined sugar? Yes, most definitely!

Health Benefits of Lemon Grass

!±8± Health Benefits of Lemon Grass

Lemon grass or the local tanglad (scientific name: Cymbopogon ciatrus) is one of those wondrous herbs that one can always associate with Asian cooking Thai, Malaysian and Vietnamese homegrown meal enthusiasts always have this tropical grass at hand for its aromatic citrus flavor with a trace of ginger. Few people know that its other popular name is citronella - the common scent you usually find in candles, perfumes and soaps.

Citronella is known for its calming effect that relieves insomnia or stress. It is also considered as a mild insect repellant. But more than scent, tanglad or lemon grass provides a lot of health benefits. Studies have shown that the lemon grass has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Mixed with pepper, it's a home therapy for menstrual troubles and nausea. Drank as tea, it is an effective diuretic. When it comes to pets, citronella is used to neutralize excessive barking of dogs. Since dogs hate citronella, it is sprayed to dogs to prevent them from barking or just to lessen the behavior.

The Lemon grass is a good cleanser that helps to detoxify the Liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder and the digestive tract. It cuts down uric acid, cholesterol, excess fats and other toxins in the body while stimulating digestion, blood circulation, and lactation; it also alleviates indigestion and gastroenteritis. It is said that lemongrass also helps improve the skin by reducing acne and pimples and acts as a muscle and tissue toner. Also, it can reduce blood pressure. Just make a concoction by boiling some lemon grass leaves, let it cool for a while and drink the liquid.

The leaves and base of this tender perennial are used as a food flavoring, particularly in fish and poultry dishes, and its essential oils are used medicinally. Its distinctive flavor balances hot chillies and contributes to the elaborate, multi-layered flavors of many dishes in South East Asian cuisine.

As the long, thin, grey-green leaves are tough and fibrous, the outside leaves and the tips are usually chopped very finely or discarded from the dish before it is served. The base is often ground. Citral, an essential oil also found in lemon peel, is the constituent responsible for its taste and aroma.

Lemon grass, also known as Sweet Rush and sometimes called Fever Grass in the Caribbean, can be used as a remedy for ague, fevers, and colds.

Filipino ingenuity has produced a commercial beverage made from lemon grass. A concentrate composed of lemon grass juice and muscovado sugar bottled in attractive design.

A recent study by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the department of Science and technology ( DOST ) claims that every 100g of edible tanglad when boiled can contain up to 24.205 micrograms of beta-carotene the anti-oxidant that scientists believe can help prevent cancer. Another DOST study shows that lemon grass oil has the potential as a tropical eye medication against keratomycosis, an inflammation of cornea often associated with burning or blurring of vision.

Weight Loss Menus - Choosing the Best Weight Loss Meal Plan

!±8± Weight Loss Menus - Choosing the Best Weight Loss Meal Plan

Whenever you begin a program for weight loss, you have to decide the type of weight loss menus you want to follow. There are millions of diets; some quirky ones allow you only to consume a specific substance such as grapefruit, and but traditional types such as low carbohydrate diets, low fat diets or low calorie diets, tend to be the most logical choice.

Example Weight Loss Menu:

Breakfast

1 package of plain instant oatmeal (using water)
1/2 cup of skim milk
1 Tablespoon of raisins or chopped dates
1 Tablespoon muscovado (unprocessed brown sugar) or honey. (You can use stevia or xylitol as substitutes. In that case, sweeten to taste.)
1/2 cup of orange juice

Mid-Morning Snack

1 container of flavoured low calorie yoghurt

Lunch

1 cup of vegetable soup in chicken or beef broth
Sandwich made with 1 slice of bread and 6 slices of thin sliced turkey or ham and 1 slice of low calorie cheese. Top the sandwich with a slice of tomato, and a teaspoon of yellow mustard.
Water, coffee or tea (Studies show low calorie diet drinks may make you gain weight. Water is the best choice.)

Afternoon Snack

2 Stalks of celery stuffed with
1 Tbsp. Natural Creamy Peanut Butter

Supper

1/4 pound serving salmon with pepita-lime
1/2 cup steamed vegetables
1/2 cup wild rice

Dessert or Evening Snack

3/4 cup of poached fruit with meringue topping

The theory behind the traditional diets isn't magic. You simply consume less food or intake food that produces lower amounts of energy you convert to fat. If you're on a low fat diet, you still need some fat in your diet to maintain bodily functions. The same is true for a low carbohydrate diet. Low carbohydrate doesn't mean 'no carbohydrate.' Weight loss menus that are low in carbohydrates simply eliminates starchy vegetables and replaces it with fruits and vegetables abundant in nutrients but lower in carbohydrates. Of course, existing on a diet that has no calories is fasting and not recommended for any length of time.

Switch To Muscovado Sugar

!±8± Switch To Muscovado Sugar

I have never used white or refined sugar. But I know I get it from many sources like commercially prepared foods. When I was very young, my mother told me brown sugar is better because it is more nutritious. I suspected it had something to do with the price, as brown sugar is far cheaper than white.

Later, I was taught in school that sugarcane rods are bathed in a pool of chlorine to bleach the sugar into white. That forever veered me away from white sugar.

I have been happy with my brown sugar until I came to know of something better - muscovado or unrefined raw sugar. Muscovado is also known as kalamay or mascobado. It is even closer to natural sugarcane juice than brown sugar. Muscovado sugar went through little processing and thus retains more of the vitamins and minerals of natural sugarcane.

Compared to white sugar, muscovado has 40 times more calcium, 6 times more phosphorus, 12 times more iron and has magnesium and zinc which have been stripped altogether from white sugar. Wouldn't it be nice to have a sugar which is a multivitamin and mineral supplement, too?

The drawback with traditional muscovado is that they are processed under unchecked sanitary conditions. Thus, a common comment I grew up hearing was of cockroaches or soil in sacks of mascobado. It is usual to see in public markets basins of muscovado sugar left open for flies and other insects to hover over.

Recently, however, as researchers uncovered the nutritional superiority of muscovado over other sugars, stricter sanitary checks and quality control have made available safe and clean muscovado sugar.

Supermarkets now have BFAD-approved and well-labeled muscovado sugar packages. They sell for almost twice the price of brown sugar. Brown sugar currently sells for 53 pesos per kilo while muscovado sells for 86 pesos a kilo. I would not mind spending some more since I know I am paying for the calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, zinc and all other vitamins and phytochemicals which researchers may not yet have found.

This does not mean, however, that we can consume muscovado sugar as much as we like. We should observe the correct RDA or recommended dietary allowance. Muscovado sugar is classed under carbohydrates and our consumption of them should be calculated accordingly.

The brand of muscovado I am using claims that it is made from organically-grown sugarcane. Which means no chemical fertilizers or pesticides have been used in the sugarcane farm. This adds more value to the sugar.

With muscovado sugar, my comfort drinks become even more comforting.
